History


Barangay Panacan is one of the 182 Barangays of Davao City, created on March 01, 1937. Presently, it is composed of 43 Puroks and 13 newly opened residential lots on site occupancy Homeowners association (un-establish Puroks) bounded with Five Barangays; namely: Barangay Ilang (North), Barangay Sasa (South), Barangay Communal (Southwest), Barangay Indangan (West), and Barangay Mudiang (East). Barangay Panacan has a coastal margin of 3.3. Kilometers facing from the eastern part, which is the Pakiputan Channel. It is strategically located fourteenth (14) kilometers north from the City Poblacion of Davao, four (4) kilometers away from the Davao Port and has an accessible distance of Two (2) kilometers from Davao International Airport. It is politically located at the District of Bunawan and within the second congressional District of Davao City. The barangay has an aggregate area of One Thousand and Two hundred Sixty One point Sixty Seven (1, 261.67 has.). It has Seven Thousand Seven Hundred Eighty Nine number of Household with an approximate population of Twenty Eight Thousand Forty Seven (28, 047) as of May 01, 2000 (based on NSO survey of 2000).

GEOGRAPHICAL STATISTICS:

Aside of being known and identified as the Regional Industrial Center of Davao City, it is likewise famous to its agricultural products. Panacan, being one of the dominant of the 182 barangays of Davao City, is strategically located at the 14th kilometers north from the heart of the City. It is likewise located at Political District of Bunawan and at the Second Congressional District of Davao City.

GEOGRAPHICAL SETTING:

Barangay Panacan is bounded with four (4) adjacent barangays; namely: Mudiang in north, Ilang in the northwest, Sasa in the South, Communal in the West, Indangan in the Southwest and the coastal part, the Pakiputan Channel east of straight. Barangay Panacan is traversed by a National Highway going to Panabo City and other municipalities of Compostela Valley (COMVAL), Tagum City, Lupon, Mati Davao Oriental, Surigao City, Butuan City and Cagayan De Oro City. It is about two kilometers away from Holcim Philippines-Davao Plant one of the most known cement producers in the Philippines and it is two kilometers likewise away from TEFASCO wharf, a privately owned wharf going to the north of Davao City. Barangay Panacan is ideally a best place for business purposes for this is located near the Davao International Airport going to the West and Sasa wharf, a government owned wharf going to the south.

ECONOMIC INDICATOR OF PANACAN:

Panacan has an aggregate of land area of 1, 261.67 hectares, with 50 % residential, 30% agricultural and 20% industrial and commercial purposes. The topography of the land is the best factor that made Panacan an ideal for diversified farming and this contributes the economy of the barangay. Panacan has a good climate and its soil is so pro-life and fertile that gives nourishment to any crops to be planted therein contribute much to the productivity of the area in its different community. It produces approximately 100 tons of copra annually. It also produces corn, vegetables, orchard products, fruits and bananas. Backyard poultry, hog raising, goat raising, carabao and cow raising all of which uplifted to the economic growth of the constituents basically.

Major sources of livelihood are employment to private and government institutions, business and self-employment, farming, driving, fishing, industrial and others. Since Panacan is located in between the airport and wharf facilities this made the barangay an important for Ocean going vessels and for the exports of its products, such as; copra and coco charcoal. The Philippine Japan Active Carbon (PJAC) plant is located only in barangay Panacan. Panacan approximately Two kilometers from Davao International Airport, this has good access for airline facilities that maintain regular daily and has a good access to better businesses to both local and tourism investors in the barangay and in Davao City, particularly.

The wharf and airport facilities and good roads accelerated the economic growth of barangay Panacan. The accessibility of transportation both in land, air and water going to the south, north and crossing through the pakiputan channel areas as tourist destination of works, known EAGA-East Asian Growth Area. Domestic products are shipped to and even the exported products to most part in the world.

The rise of the NETWORK BANK, Pawnshops establishments, Panacan Traders Incorporated (PTI) and EGD Public Market, Gasoline Stations, Cargo Forwarders and Van Carriers, Funeral Chapel like St. Peter, , Davao Beta Spring Inc., Hardware’s, corporations and transport services establishments, Kettle factories, plastic recycling factories, NAKASHIN Food Davao-a Japanese Frozen Food producers, International Pharmaceutical Company, UNIFRUTTI and others, so with fishing industry and other marine coastal products had contributed much to the economy of this Barangay and of course, this includes agricultural products. Various subdivisions had been developed tremendously and this started from 1980 in simultaneous when businesses in Barangay Panacan had eventually in boom.

If today Barangay Panacan has gone far in economic development, this can somehow be attributed to the hardworking and good relationship of our Barangay Officials of the time spearheaded by Barangay Captain, ARNOLFO L. APOSTOL to maintain the peace and order condition of this barangay with the proper coordination of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the essence of maintaining good relationship among the Barangay constituents which are considered most as the best chemistry towards progress and development.
